Control fibreboard conversion processes

FB451.1 Make conversion processes ready for production

You must show that you:

1 Check that you have all the details required for the job
2 Check that you have enough materials of the right type for the job
3 Promptly report to your manager, if the material provided is not correct or sufficient
4 Check that your work area is safe and ready for production
5 Correctly load materials
6 Check that cutting formes/printing plates/inks/stitching wire and adhesives matches the job details

Make the conversion processes ready to run efficiently and safely so that:

  • Material is fed squarely into the machine
  • The position of cuts, creases and print is correct
  • The position of glue points and stitching is correct
  • Finished products are within variations allowed by your company
  • The process runs at the required speed
8 Produce a sample from the machine and check that it matches the required standards
9 Make adjustments when standards are not met
10 Report promptly to your manager if the standards cannot be met

The principles of cutting, creasing, printing and closing process

K2 The sequence of set up task for required finish
K3 How to synchronise the relevant units
K4 The types of formes, creasing tools, printing plates, inks, adhesives and stitching wire
K5 Ink viscosity
K6 The principles of glue tack adhesion
K7 The risks associated with making ready conversion processes and how to avoid them
K8 What the common printing, cutting, creasing, stitching and gluing faults are, what causes them and how to prevent them
K9 The emergency shut down procedures

Performance evidence

You must show that you can make ready the following processes, which are printing, slotting, creasing, die-cutting and closing consistently over a period of time.

Your evidence must show:

Obtain the following materials:

  • Fibreboard sheets
  • Inks
  • Plates
  • Formes
  • Glues
  • Stitching Wire
  • Tape
R2

You can confirm that the processes are ready for production by:

  • Visual examination
  • Test run
  • Checking the control settings
R3

You check the quality of samples against your company's quality standards for:

  • The position of cuts, creases, print, stitching and gluing
  • The cuts and creases are clean
  • The print is correct shade
  • The stitching and gluing process covers the manufacturer's joint
  • The stitches are fully clenched
  • The tape covers the manufacturer's
