005 - Overview
Train new operators

To achieve your unit certificate, you must show that you can 

005.1 Contribute to the assessment of individuals training needs
005.2 Train new operators to production, quality and performance standards
005.3 Provide feedback on trainees progress and performance

This involves:

  • assessing the skills of new trainees
  • identifying individuals' training needs for jobs within your area of responsibility
  • identifying how trainees can safely learn and apply skills in your work area
  • implementing planned training in your work area
  • giving trainees on-the-job instruction and supervising their work
  • assessing individuals' progress in acquiring and applying job skills and skills in working with others
  • gaining individuals' feedback on their progress and achievements
  • keeping training records
  • reporting trainees' progress

Collecting the evidence for this unit

Your performance evidence must show that you have covered all of the statements in the You must show that section in each element, and must be the result of real work activities in actual production situations. Simulation is not acceptable for this unit.

Your assessor will need to be satisfied that you have the necessary understanding specified in each 'K' list. Where this is not evident from your performance, you may be asked oral or written questions, or to write a short report.

You may need to provide other information to support your performance evidence. Here are some examples:

  • your assessments of new operator's training needs
  • your records of training activity and trainee progress
  • copies of your company's training programmes for new operators
  • copies of feedback given to trainees

written or spoken reports describing

  • how you determined the level of supervision needed by new operators
  • how to ensure that feedback is fair and how to give this feedback to trainees
