Reduce risks to health and safety in your work place


To achieve your unit certificate, you must show that you can 

001.1 Reduce risks to yourself and other
001.2 Take action to deal with accidents and emergencies

You must show that you use safe working methods, by following the safety procedures required by law, and by your company. This involves:

  • taking care to eliminate risks which might harm you or others in your work area;
  • reporting any risks which you cannot eliminate (for example, because you do not have the authority to do so, or it is too risky for you to tackle them on your own);
  • alerting others to risks;
  • making sure that emergency exits and escape routes are kept clear at all times.

You must also show that you know how to deal with accidents and emergencies when they occur. This involves:

  • keeping yourself up-to-date with emergency procedures;
  • activating the alarm when an emergency or accident occurs;
  • making your work area safe before leaving it;
  • reporting accidents and emergencies.

Your assessor will need to be satisfied that you have the necessary understanding specified in each 'K' list. Where this is not evident from your performance, you may be asked oral or written questions, or to write a short report.

It may be difficult for you to produce evidence for this unit, during the course of your normal work. Your assessor may accept other forms of evidence, such as answers to questions, a log you have kept of how you have handled incidents in the past, witness testimony from your manager, or your performance during a fire drill.
