Reduce risks to health and safety in your work place


001.1 Reduce risks to yourself and others


You must show that you:

1 work in a way which protects the health and safety of everyone
2 promptly warn others about the risks in your work area
3 Safely eliminate risks in your work area
4 report to your manager any risks you are unable to remove, as soon as is practical
5 keep emergency exits and routes clear at all times
6 report accidents and dangerous occurrences promptly and accurately to your manager
7 report injuries promptly to the person responsible for first aid and to your manager

You must understand:

K1

your responsibility for health and safety under

  • the law, including the Health and Safety at Work Act (section 7), COSHH, RIDDOR
  • codes of practice, company procedures and safe working methods
K2 what will happen to you if you do not obey health and safety laws
K3 what risks you are most likely to face at work, and how to identify them
K4 what procedures you must follow to report accident and injuries
K5 what your company's health and safety policy and systems say
K6 what safety instructions are provided by suppliers, manufacturers and your own company, for the use of materials and equipment
K7 what safety clothing, footwear and equipment to use in your work
K8 how to lift and handle items safely
K9 who is responsible for first aid in your work area


Performance evidence

You must show that you can reduce risks to yourself and others in your workplace consistently, over a period of time.

Your evidence must show:

R1 the use of safe working methods
R2 your identification of risks in your area
R3 how safely you deal with risks in your area
R4 what to do in the event of an accident or emergency
R5 your awareness of the locations and requirements of emergency exits and routes
